Next Generation of young Nissan Ambassadors

Eleven young Irish innovators and achievers in the fields of business, technology, sport, fashion and music have landed the keys to new Nissan cars after being selected as Nissan Generation Next ambassadors.

The new car ambassadors have been given a golden opportunity to follow their dream of making it on the national and world stage with the backing and support of Nissan after fending off competition from over 1,000 applicants.

They were among the 20 finalists put forward to a three week long online vote where members of the public cast over 100,000 votes to decide who would join the prestigious ambassad or programme for the coming year.

“Nissan Generation Next supports Ireland’s leaders of tomorrow. The standard of entry this year was exceptional. We had a difficult task to select 20 finalists and the 100,000 votes cast during the public vote is a terrific endorsement of the programme,” said James McCarthy, CEO of Nissan Ireland.

Car Spots Third Generation Toyota Vios

Car Spots aims to showcase newly introduced vehicles in which if these vehicles are competitive enough to play basketball with current vehicles. It will also give you our initial impressions on a certain vehicle which means this is not a full length review.

Our second vehicle to be featured here is the third generation Toyota Vios, whose taxi image is being shunned for something funky looking. July had passed and three months later, lets see if this vehicle is still fresh.

Photos are still taken using my cellphone camera. Toyota Vios G unit spotted at SM Megamall.

Exterior
Awkward chubby styling no more; the Vios had grew in size and sports sleek lines. Think of it as a Camry that was shrunken but without being mistaken for one. The Metropolis would be littered with good looking taxis which both drivers and operators be happy for the Christmas season. I have no idea whether this design would age gracefully. Want orange? You have to o rder the 1.5 G. Before anything else, the rims are same for E and G grades with color coded door handles while the J gets black door handles and steel wheels with hubcaps.

Interior
There are numerous improvements that the Vios had and the notable among them all is the migration of the gauges from the center to right where it should be, in front of the driver. The X-Trail and the Spark had them in the center before but learned to place it in their proper location. Apart from the gauges, the interior is wrapped in black and beige plastics and the fake stitched leather is an awkward scene especially with the two tone color theme (the Crosswind has a similar motif, but no expensive bag inspired stitches present). Other than the two, cup holders are now the pull type than the flip ones and the air-con vents arent anymore the spin type. The radio is the floating type which bade goodbye to the integrated system of the previous model, making a switch to a touch screen radio possible. Airbags, two of them, come standard for all variants. Cabin space is still excellent, not anymore the awkward occurrence of the front occupants and thanks to a redesigned front seats that benefit rear occupants.

Engine
Call it old, but the 1.3 and the 1.5 engines can chug along especially they have power in the low range and can drive at any point without any stress. Of course, fuel efficiency is tops.

Price
Since this one is battling it out with established rivals, the Vios has its own advantages and disadvantages. The 1.3 E makes do with the same amount of kit minus the leather touches on the steering wheel, projector lamps, and speakers mounte d on the A-pillar. For the safety conscious in you, dual airbags come across the range which some competitors make do with one or virtually none. It is sulit in its own way.

Verdict
Shunning its taxi cab image is a long way to go, but with the third generation Vios it makes some steps closer. Then, proving you are reliable is a feat on itself. For sub-compact buyers, this vehicle must be present on your shopping list.

Many thanks to:

Used Car Review Kia Sportage 2011 2016

Seeing cars evolve is one thing Myk Belmonte does and is curious of this one.

2011-2016 Kia Sportage

History
Kias first attempt to the sport utility race is the truck based first generation Sportage, which shares its underpinnings with the Mazda Bongo. It never caught on (even in its home country, it wasnt a best seller in the first place), especially that the Japanese excelled in this category and having a diesel engine didnt attract buyers. The second generation model which is now based on the Hyundai Elantra platform and is the sibling of the Tucson, was a better attempt and didnt have the teething problems of the past but was relegated to the second tier level. It wasnt until the third generation model that its appeal became mainstream and now in the playing field.

Released months after its Hyundai Tucson platform-mate, the Sportage is virtually the same in every aspects except for several items inside and out . Just like its corporate cousin, it was a home-run for Kia in every country it was available and sometimes outselling Hyundai.

Filipino consumers had to wait until the middle of 2011 to grab their hands for the local release of the Sportage. Unlike the previous generation model, it became a first class choice among buyers of the segment. First models were the EX sporting the 2.0 engine in either front or all wheel drive while 2012 saw the launch of a sub-million pesos LX paired to a manual transmission in June, a more powerful 2.4 4WD having more options in July, and a front wheel drive diesel variant in October. LX models were made available as a downgraded model (which we will discuss in total later).

Value and Costs
Similar to the Hyundai Tucson, the cheapest models that you can find and buy is priced at P550,000 while choosing a late release model (2014 onwards) hover at the P900,000 thereabouts. As always, gasoline models do cost less t han their diesel counterparts and Kia has their five year warranty, which makes things less worrisome. Wed warn you as early as now, equipment in several model years are less as you get in an old model.

If youre aiming for the front wheel drive models (which mostly comprise), do keep an eye on the stabilizer link and in general, some suspension quirks and drivetrain noise. Thankfully, parts are Hyundai derived and you wouldnt need to worry about it since the H badge sells more than the Kia.

Exterior and Interior
Audis Peter Schreyer was a wise investment Kia had done, especially that his design language had done good to overhaul the image of the Korean brand; and the effect for the Sportage is a more sharp exterior which is complemented by aggressive looking head and tail lamps, daytime running lights (removed in 2014 models), and a rear window which has poor rear visibility. 2014 models had its DRLs and side mirror signal lights deleted and the following year had 16 inch wheels (than the 17 ones of the early ones), fog lamps, and roof rails gone.

As we said with the Tucson months ago, the Sportage suffers the same fate: a modern interior that is of high quality and a well assembled dashboard that has some of the bad pieces mixed in. Another niggle inside is the lack of storage space at the back, which is a trade-off for more space for humans than materials. Later downgraded models do not anymore have the trip computer, steering wheel controls, and make do with a plastic steering wheel.

Engine
Straight from Hyundais engine stockyard is what powers the Kia Sportage. Initial models have the Theta II 2.0 having 165hp at 6,200rpm and 197Nm at 4,600rpm that was offered between 2011 to 2013/4 and an upgrade to the NU 2.0 resulted to 156hp at 6,200rpm and 192Nm at 4,600rpm. If you are aiming for the DLX it has a Theta II 2.4 that gives you 176hp at 6,000rpm and 226Nm at 4,000rpm wh ile the diesel uses the R 2.0 engine which displaces 174hp at 4,000rpm and 392Nm at 1,800-2,500rpm. When it comes to overall performance, the 2.0 gasoline performs decently if youre picking the front wheel drive but somewhat struggles when paired to the all-wheel-drive, the 2.4 has much better power delivery even when combined with AWD. Choosing the diesel will reward you ample power and wide powerband, which is good especially it has power from two wheels only.

Driving Impressions
Yes, it may have the word "sport" in its name but driving impressions is far from it, especially that it has electric power steering that makes steering light but driving experience numb. Although the cabin has ample space inside, backing up is a trouble and the ride is firm for some people. Same symptoms with its Hyundai brother here, of course.

Verdict
The spot light all went to the Hyundai Tucson, but this alone does not make the Sportage a le sser model. Sure, parts are similar to each other as well as the good and bad traits, but differences inside and out make things interesting for the buyer and that makes it also an appealing option.

The Good:
  • Impressive diesel engine
  • Handles good
  • Cheap to buy
The Bad:
  • Limited rear visibility
  • Poor ride quality
  • Some cheap touches inside
The Pick: Any diesels

Used Car Review Suzuki APV 2005 Current

Need something practical for less cash? Myk Belmonte gives you a suggestion.

2005-Current Suzuki APV

History
Indonesians love multi-purpose vehicles since the birth of the Toyota Kijang in that place. In fact the Toyota Avanza (and its Daihatsu Xenia twin) are the common vehicles roaming the streets of the island nation. Talk about small size and little maintenance costs, it inspired competitors to develop this type of vehicle for the market.

Designed in Japan and produced by Suzukis Indonesian subsidiary, the APV was first launched in 2004 together with the Mitsubishi Maven (basically the same model with a different design and Mitsubishis 4G15 engine but discontinued after 2009). It was made available first in a MPV body with pick-up versions followed suit.

After fielding Carry in the passenger van market back then, the APV was made available to the Philippine consumer back in 2005 with ads that feature Dor aemon. This vehicle provided an alternative to the common Adventure and Crosswind duo and the new kid on the block Innova until the Avanza came along a year later. Updates were done in May 2008 and November 2011 which included some revisions in the trim line. Variants include the base GA (added in 2006), GL, GLX, and SGX (made available in the 2008 revision).

Value and Costs
Do not worry if you have limited funds to purchase a brand new unit, especially a second hand APV costs between P200,000 for older models to P500,000 for later ones. Go with a July 2011 and later model to take advantage of the warranty.

Engine components are shared with the Vitara, which means maintenance costs are on the low side. Do take note that the engine is situated under the front passenger seats which makes access a little bit difficult.

Exterior and Interior
Unlike other contemporaries, the APV possesses a tall height which translate s to a good headroom inside while retaining its compact size. It has some resemblance to a loaf of bread due to its lines and size. Let us not deal with this aspect too much.

Jumping to the drivers seat requires you some adjustments if you had graduated from a sedan, since the steering wheel is positioned akin to a bus, a high seating position, and oddly placed pedals. Good thing the second and third row benches are equally placed which can give you capacity for six people at the back. SGX models gain a second row captains chair which can be adjusted forward and reclined if desired. Thank goodness that the radio and air-con controls are within the drivers reach. Before anything else, the GA does not have any power amenities except steering.

Engine
No diesel engine under the hood, but instead we find a G16A 1,590cc gasoline having 91hp at 5,750rpm and 127Nm at 4,500rpm. Having a weight worth 1,300kg, the 1.6 engine might have trouble in motiva ting the APV no thanks to a double digit horsepower rating. If its full, you have to mash every revs to extract power that is available.

Driving Impressions
For those who want something that will inspire their driving, go elsewhere. Handling isnt exciting and steering feedback is on the bad side, no thanks to a steering wheel that is small. But then, youll be treated to an expanse outside visibility which is a good thing.

Verdict
If you want something cheap to purchase that can carry seven to eight people in a pinch, the APV is the answer. However, in the price range, we would be picking something that is more superior in every aspect especially that the devil of depreciation hit them.

The Good:
  • Headroom
  • Small size means easy city driving
  • High height
The Bad:
  • Crude suspension layout
  • Engine is overta xed
  • Somewhat limited space
The Pick: 1.6 GLX

THE SPECS
Engine: 1,590cc G16A I4 gasoline
Power: 91hp @ 5,750rpm
Torque: 127Nm @ 4,500rpm
Fuel Consumption: 6-8km/L (city), 8-11km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)
Transmission: 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic
Suspension: Front independent McPherson strut, rear rigid axle semi-elliptic leaf spring
